China's "Airborne UAV Carrier" Drone Concludes First Flight

(MENAFN) China's Jetank unmanned aerial vehicle—dubbed an "airborne UAV carrier"—successfully executed its inaugural flight Thursday in Shaanxi province's central region, media reported.

The massive drone platform possesses capabilities to deploy multiple smaller unmanned systems mid-flight, representing a significant advancement in China's UAV engineering sector, according to the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC).

Officials anticipate the Jetank's operational rollout will accelerate the low-altitude economic sector, stimulate technological innovation, and strengthen the nation's aviation manufacturing capabilities.

The aircraft incorporates modular architecture enabling rapid mission reconfiguration, while technical specifications include: 16.35-meter fuselage length (53.5 feet), 25-meter wingspan (82 feet), 16-ton maximum takeoff mass (35,274 pounds), 6,000 kg cargo capacity (13,228 pounds), 12-hour flight endurance, and 7,000 km operational range (4,350 miles).

Civilian applications span supply transportation, disaster response operations, telecommunications infrastructure restoration, and environmental monitoring missions, media documented in its coverage.

Initially unveiled at Airshow China 2024, the Jetank possesses military utility through weapon hardpoints accommodating missiles and bombs, with mission-type conversions achievable within two hours via modular payload systems.

The platform integrates a specialized isomerism-hive module capable of transporting loitering munitions or compact drones, justifying its "airborne UAV carrier" designation.

In separate aviation developments, China's first domestically engineered 800-kg-class heavy-lift eVTOL aircraft, the AR-E800, accomplished its maiden flight Wednesday in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province.

Manufactured by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China, the AR-E800 features an adaptable cargo compartment transitioning between internal and external transport configurations, media reported citing Science and Technology Daily.

With 300-kg (nearly 661 pounds) payload capabilities, the electric vertical takeoff and landing craft targets operations including high-altitude station equipment delivery, complex terrain navigation, and supply plus emergency response missions.
