China’s Jetank Drone Takes Flight
The sizable unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is capable of carrying several smaller drones, representing a significant advancement in China’s UAV technology, according to the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC).
The introduction of the Jetank is anticipated to stimulate the low-altitude economy, encourage technological innovation, and strengthen the aviation sector.
Designed with modularity for diverse missions, the Jetank boasts impressive specifications: 16.35 meters in length (53.5 feet), a wingspan of 25 meters (82 feet), maximum takeoff weight of 16 tons (35,274 pounds), payload capacity of 6,000 kg (13,228 pounds), 12 hours of endurance, and a range of 7,000 km (4,350 miles).
The UAV is versatile for civilian applications such as transporting supplies, supporting disaster relief, restoring communications, and conducting environmental surveys, as highlighted in a report by the media outlet.
First unveiled at Airshow China 2024, the Jetank also possesses military functionalities, including hardpoints for missiles and bombs. Its modular payload system allows it to switch mission types in less than two hours.
Equipped with a specialized isomerism-hive module capable of carrying loitering munitions or smaller drones, the Jetank has earned the nickname “airborne UAV carrier.”
