China’s Jetank drone makes its first maiden flight
Designed to carry multiple smaller drones, the Jetank is expected to advance China’s low-altitude economy, stimulate innovation, and strengthen the aviation sector. The drone features a modular design allowing for diverse mission types. Its specifications are notable: 16.35 meters (53.5 feet) in length, a 25-meter (82-foot) wingspan, a maximum takeoff weight of 16 tons (35,274 pounds), a 6,000 kg (13,228 pounds) payload capacity, a 12-hour endurance, and a range of 7,000 km (4,350 miles).
The UAV can be applied in civilian contexts including supply transport, disaster relief, communication restoration, and environmental monitoring. Revealed at Airshow China 2024, the Jetank also has military potential, with hardpoints for missiles and bombs and the ability to switch mission configurations within two hours using modular payloads. Its specialized isomerism-hive module enables it to carry loitering munitions or smaller drones, earning the nickname “airborne UAV carrier.”
Separately, China’s first domestically developed heavy-lift eVTOL aircraft, the AR-E800, completed its maiden flight Wednesday in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province. Built by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China, the AR-E800 has a versatile cargo bay that can switch between internal and external transport, with a payload capacity of 300 kg (661 pounds). It is intended for operations in challenging terrain, delivering equipment to high-altitude stations, and supporting emergency and supply missions.
